Nestled on the shores of beautiful Bowers Harbor the Boathouse takes full advantage of its delightful view of the docks and bay with wide-open windows and a summer deck. Indoors, the charming decor invokes a relaxed cottage atmosphere where both the casually and formally attired feel welcome.

 

Our talented culinary team pays attention to the entire plate, combining flavor, texture and presentation together so there won’t be a bite you don’t enjoy. Sunday brunch, cocktails by the fireplace, or dinner during our exclusive sunset views make your dining experience a memorable one.

 

There is an absolutely exquisite view from any area in the restaurant. Every dining experience at the Boathouse is accompanied by gorgeous West Grand Traverse Bay and sunsets that make for an unforgettable evening.

Our Executive Chef

 

The Boathouse’s culinary team is headed by Executive Chef Jim Morse. Jim is a fourth generation Northern Michigan native and attended culinary school at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute at Northwestern Michigan College. He started working at The Boathouse as Sous Chef in 2000, and became Executive Chef in 2002. Jim then moved to Siren Hall in Elk Rapids in 2008 where he spent five years as Sous Chef. He returned to The Boathouse as Executive Chef in the fall of 2013.

 

Jim teaches part time at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute at Northwestern Michigan College and loves to share his knowledge and experience with up and coming chefs. Most recently Jim taught World Cuisine which studies foods and cultures throughout Europe, North Africa, Asia, and the New World. Jim uses his knowledge of these cuisines to create dishes that are unique and well balanced. The ideas used in Asian cooking regarding balance and harmony of flavors are blended with Western techniques to create new and exciting dishes.

 

Chef Jim’s menus reflect the growing demand for seasonal and locally sourced foods. Many dishes include fruits, vegetables, or herbs grown on The Boathouse Farm. Meats, fish, cheeses, and wild foods are sourced from some of the best farmers, foragers, and artisans in the area. Jim’s goal in creating new dishes is to blend the exotic with the familiar to offer the diner an experience rooted in tradition but exceeding their expectations with new flavors and combinations.

I have been in the restaurant industry for over twenty years, and I never tire of hearing customers tell me what a wonderful experience they have had at the Boathouse.

 

It is our philosophy at the Boathouse that dining out should be more than entertainment; it should be an occasion of joy and fulfillment. From start to finish, we strive to ensure that this happens with delicious food, amazing service and extraordinary ambience.

 

The Boathouse experience begins with a drive along the shores of beautiful West Bay and its sparkling blue waters. Upon arrival, you will be warmly greeted by either me or one of my friendly staff members. Your eyes will immediately be drawn to the welcoming cottage décor and the wall of windows that affords outstanding views of Bowers Harbor and the marina.

 

Once you are seated, our knowledgeable wait staff will offer advice in guiding you through the extensive food and wine menus. And while you are enjoying your meal our culinary team may venture out of the kitchen to share recipes and restaurant stories.

 

It is of the utmost importance to all of us at the Boathouse that our customers feel comfortable and appreciated. Offering fine dining in a casual atmosphere is, in my mind, the ultimate way to achieve this. That includes a welcoming space; elegant white table linens; fresh, high-quality, prepared-from-scratch ingredients; the finest wine selections; and gracious, accommodating service. Our guests may be joining us straight from the beach, a bike ride or the golf course, or dressed to the nines for a special occasion – in any case, their attire is the right attire for the Boathouse. All of this, combined with our incomparable waterfront location, provides the ultimate Northern Michigan dining experience.

 

While I am proud of the accolades that the Boathouse has received over the years from both local and statewide media, as well as from our customers, I am most proud of my staff. They are loyal and dedicated to their profession and truly skilled in what they do. Their enthusiasm, teamwork and smiling faces make it a pleasure for me to come to work every day.
